Great Gatsby Notes 1/23/18

Nick Carr away - narrator in the book. Not only does he narrate the story, but he portrays himself as the author of the book itself. He starts by talking about himself and the most important thing he learned from his father:to reserve judgement about other people, because if he holds them up to his own moral standards, he will eventually misunderstand them. for example, sometimes people would tell the narrator things he didn't want to hear, but he would listen anyways just to broaden his views no matter where the other person's views are coming from. He describes himself as both really moral and tolerant.
Allusion: a reference to something the author assumes the reader has previous knowledge about.
